The History
At the southern tip of Charleston’s peninsula, White Point Garden is a public park and a natural stop for a stroll. It combines one of the best views of Charleston Harbor with a rich history.
The site was originally called Oyster Point because of the piles of sun-bleached oyster shells that were easily found where the land meets the water. The name changed to White Point by 1700.
In 1718, Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet was hung here along with his crew, and a year later, Richard Worley’s crew was hanged in the same spot. These events are just part of the rich history that surrounds this 5.7 acre park.
The View
The southern tip of the Charleston peninsula is where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet to form the Atlantic Ocean. That is also where you will find White Point Garden, one of Charleston’s most iconic city parks and a must-see destination for visitors to the area.
The 5.7 acre public park is located on the Battery, a defensive wall and promenade that runs along the coastline of downtown Charleston. With its antebellum mansions, Charleston harbor views, and tall Palmetto and ancient Live Oak trees, it is a natural place to enjoy a walk or picnic under the shade.
Before the area became a public park in 1837, it was known as Oyster Point due to the oyster shells that were bleached by the sun. The site became notorious for pirates who were captured by the town’s residents and hung here. The remains of Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet and his men are believed to still rest beneath the waters. The Fun
At the end of the Charleston peninsula where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet the harbor, White Point Garden offers stunning views as well as some fun. It’s also a great place to teach your kids about America’s military history!
Children will love running around under the large oak trees draped with Spanish moss, cannonballing into leaf piles and picking up fallen azaleas. They’ll also appreciate the relics scattered throughout, including historic mortars and cannons used for defense.
One of the most interesting parts of the park is where a bronze epitaph marks the spot where Stede Bonnet, the most notorious pirate in Charleston’s history, was hanged in 1720. While it’s not particularly haunted, a visit here in the middle of the night might make you feel a little uneasy.
The Music

At the park’s center is a towering Fort Moultrie monument, also known as the “Sergeant Jasper Statue.” This is a tribute to Charleston’s Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper, who led the colonists to victory in an early battle on Sullivan’s Island.
The Cannons
