Folly Beach County Park

Folly Beach County Park SC is one of the best beaches to visit in Charleston. It features endless miles of pristine sandy beach, outdoor showers, accessible restrooms, changing areas, and a snack bar (seasonally).

Bring your family and pets to enjoy the sun and surf on this beautiful Lowcountry beach. During the summer, lifeguards are on duty and chairs and umbrellas are available for rent. Read on to find out more.

Best for Parks

Located on the isolated west end of Folly Beach, this park is home to stunning views and plenty of activities. Visitors to the area can enjoy fishing, walking, and birding at the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier. There is a parking fee (which varies seasonally and depending on whether it’s a holiday weekend).

The park also offers restrooms, outdoor showers, beach chair, and umbrella rentals, and a full snack bar. The CCPRC Gold Pass gets you free parking here and at most other CCPRC facilities.

The park is pet friendly and features a quarter acre of passive public recreation. The Dog Park is fenced and allows for the supervised exercise of man’s best friend. There is even a water fountain for the dogs. Adjacent to the park is the fenced Pirate’s Cove Playground for the kids. It features swings, see-saws, and a covered gazebo. The Wave Watch Playground is another popular attraction. It features a large covered gazebo and is surrounded by shade trees.

Best for Outdoor Activities

While Folly Beach County Park is best known for its beaches, it also offers a wide variety of other outdoor activities. Those looking to explore the area’s waterways can rent kayaks and paddleboards from nearby Tideline Tours, while fishing enthusiasts will find that Morris Island is home to numerous fish species, including redfish and trout.

Those who prefer to stay on land can take advantage of the 1.1-mile Folly Beach Park Path, which is a great way to stretch your legs and enjoy beach views in a relaxing setting. For a more exciting excursion, take a jet ski or parasailing ride to get a new perspective of the stunning Folly Beach coastline.

In addition to its oceanfront swimming areas, the park has restrooms, showers, a snack bar, lifeguards on duty during summer, and chair and umbrella rentals (about $10 per item, per day). Visitors should remember to respect the dunes, as they are essential to the area’s ecosystem. A great place to also visit is North Charleston Wannamaker County Park.

Best for Pets

Folly Beach County Park is the perfect place to take Fido for a day of fun in the sun. However, pet owners should remember to bring leashes at all times to ensure a safe and pleasant visit.

Located on the west end of Folly Island, this pawtastic park finds itself nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Folly River. It boasts more than 4,000 feet of beachfront and features lifeguards during the peak season along with a beautiful beachfront designated swimming area. Skimmer Flats, a major Eastern Brown Pelican rookery, is also visible at the west end of the park.

During off-peak season, from October 1 through April 30, dogs are welcome on the beach as long as they are on a leash at all times. Be sure to bring plenty of water for your pup, and always be prepared with pet waste bags to help keep this pristine beach clean for everyone.

Best for Families

If you’re traveling with kids or teenagers, Folly Beach has plenty of family-friendly attractions. For example, the nearby Inlet Heritage Preserve offers hiking and picnicking opportunities in a more secluded area than the crowded Folly Beach Public Beach. And you’ll be able to take in sweeping views of the ocean and coastline from the Morris Island Lighthouse.

The beach itself can also be a great place for kids to play. They’ll enjoy building sand castles and exploring the tide pools. And they’ll have the chance to see dolphins up close on a variety of boat tours. You can find companies like Charleston SUP Safaris and Flipper Finders offering dolphin cruises during the day or at sunset.

Folly Beach also has a number of family-friendly events and festivals throughout the year. They celebrate everything from community and heritage to food and music. Next blog post.
