Riverfront Park

From family picnics to nationally acclaimed festivals, North Charleston’s Riverfront Park has something for everyone. The park occupies part of the former Charleston Naval Base and adjoins beautifully restored historic homes such as Quarters A, a two-story neoclassical home known as Admiral’s House.

When the base closed in 1996, Noisette Company envisioned an ambitious redevelopment plan. The park, a centerpiece of that vision, is now complete. A great post ahead.

Events

A revolving gallery of outdoor artwork and a state-of-the-art performance pavilion are just some of the key features at Riverfront Park. Its old historic homes, calming river views, and graceful oak trees draw the local community to a place where they can enjoy picnicking with their families, strolling by the water, or relaxing under the stars.

On any given day visitors can also appreciate a piece of sculpture, watch the cargo ships pass by, or even photograph a sunrise or sunset. The park is free and open to the public and hosts a wide variety of community events from a Fourth of July celebration to an art finale.

The large, sweeping lawns of the park play host to larger multi-day festivals such as the Lipton Be More Tea Festival and Charleston Caribbean Jerk Festival. The pristine park has also become a music destination with musicians like Sam Hunt, Passion Pit, and Umphrey’s McGee performing across two alternating stages.

Walking Trails

Originally called Chicora Park, this area was designed by the Olmsted Brothers responsible for properties like Central Park in New York City. They wanted to create a kind of Lowcountry version with a beautiful waterfront, sports fields, meadows, and hiking/walking trails.

Today the park has a military memorial, riverfront walking/biking paths, a dog park, a fishing pier, a playground, and state of an art amphitheater that plays host to wonderful outdoor concerts and events. It is also home to a revolving and fixed gallery of beautiful outdoor sculptures.

It is free and open to the public, whether you want to stroll by cargo ships on the water, picnic with your family, watch a stunning sunset or appreciate new artwork. This is a perfect place to enjoy nature and take in the beauty of this unique southern city. Discover more exciting places here.

Picnic Shelters

Located on the former Charleston Naval Base, this park has picnic shelters overlooking peaceful river vistas. Adjacent to historic officer’s quarters and a rehabilitated naval garden, it also includes the acclaimed Angel Oak, believed to be 1,400 years old.

A boardwalk and fishing pier are popular features, and a large outdoor performance pavilion draws rock, country, and oldies acts during the free summer concerts. The complex is also home to a 15-acre water park and a botanical garden.

Pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery at this popular park, especially when its Japanese irises are in bloom. Picnic provisions are available at nearby delis and supermarkets. Bring bug spray, as mosquitoes are common in the area.

Fishing Pier

During the day, many visitors enjoy walking along the riverfront and observing the activity in Charleston Harbor. They can also take in the views from a number of family-sized swings, dip their toes in the Pineapple Fountain, and visit the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial honoring the thousands of men and women who served at the former Charleston Navy Base.

The park is a world-class recreation and leisure facility that was developed from the historic Officers’ Homes and golf course on the former Naval Base. It includes a state-of-the-art amphitheater and provides meaningful public access to the waterfront, which a city that has long struggled with drug and crime-related problems desperately needed. Fitted with a fishing pier, interpretive vistas, and a remarkable central fountain that glows at night, the park has become a major attraction for residents and visitors alike.

Dog Park

The park features a nice fenced dog area where dogs are allowed to play off-leash. It is also within walking distance of some great Charleston restaurants and hotels.

The area around the park is also home to the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial, which honors the military and civilian personnel who served at the former base. In addition to the memorial, the park also hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

There are plenty of paved walkways at this park, so you can easily take your dog for a stroll while enjoying the view. This is a fantastic place to let your pup run off-leash and meet some new friends. Just make sure to keep your dog on a leash in case you encounter other people or wildlife.
